Some Examples of Pages from my Brochure

I am also designing a brochure to coincide with the poster I designed. The brochure's intention is to educate Bayside Village residents of why smoke alarms are so crucial and how to properly maintain them. Here are some pages I have been working on that are also a work in progress but should be finalized by this weekend.

Here we go again

Poster Concept 1

This is definitely a WORK IN PROGRESS....and I am going to put a little more text that is very brief about the maintenance of smoke alarms, but feedback would be great.
Do you think the smaller subscript should be more like "test your smoke alarms monthly and replace the batteries annually" or a statistic that says " 40% of home fire deaths occur in homes where no smoke alarms are present, test yours today to ensure your family the best chance of survival" ?????

Final Problem and Purpose Statement

After conducting the greater portion of my research and hearing the investigative results of my brother's case, I decided to switch gears and change the subject matter of my project towards smoke alarms and the importance of their maintenance. Here is my Revised Problem and Purpose Statement.

Problem Statement: Residents of Bayside Village, a large housing complex in SF, neesd to recognize the necessity of properly working smoke alarms and the importance of maintaining them.

Purpose Statement: The purpose of this study was to determine an effective way to educate residents of Bayside Village of the importance of proper maintenance of smoke alarms.

incredible and edible ads

these ads blew my mind....the creativity that the team at YCN produces is un-equivocal. Mind boggling in fact.....

Final Problem and Purpose Statement

After much work and deliberation and with the help of my peers in the collaboratory on Tuesday, I have devised my final project plan for the DAI 505 Research and Development Laboratory class I am currently enrolled in this semester.
Problem: Residents of Bayside Village in San Francisco are not aware of fire hazards within their unit.
Purpose Statement: The purpose of this study is to determine why residents are not aware of fire hazards and to implement a plan to better educate them.

This project is dedicated in the memory of my big brother Matthew who lost his life on July 19, 2009 to a fire that broke out in his apartment unit in Hunington Beach, CA. My brother was fast asleep in his room when the fire erupted and passed away from smoke inhalation(the number one cause of fatalities during a fire). Had the smoke detectors been properly working and had the unit been constructed better in case of a fire, I can't help but wonder if he had a fighting chance. I want to make sure all people are aware of the building codes and the fire hazards posed in their living units and to ensure this never happens to any one again. I hope you will follow me along my journey through this process of finding a solution and creating an end to this giant issue.

YCN

So I was asked to do an assignment for my advertising creativity and production class and came across one of the most amazing design/advertising/multi-media companies i have yet to discover. They are called YCN and are located in London. They present communication in whatever media outlet their client desires, be it a campaign, publication, animation, etc. One of the designers was commissioned by think publishing to create a series of illustrations for Countryside Voice: a twice yearly magazine for supporters of the Campaign to Protect Rural England. I am in love with her idea and the way she conceptualized it on a page layout.

Goals and Aspirations

As a designer, my biggest goal in my career is to become a graphic designer for Vogue, and or ANYTHING for Vogue. That is the ultimate dream job for me, but I would really settle for any role in their company ( just something pertaining to design and layouts). In my life I want to work in publication design and layouts. I hope to be someone who oversees the production of pages in magazines and possibly an art/creative director. Fashion meeting graphic design is my passion and my love. I want to be able to find a way to blend these two quintessential elements in my own life in a harmonious and cohesive union. Although I am also getting a background in branding (with my minor in marketing and going forward with my career at FIDM), my dream is in magazines FOREVER. I love the traditional role they play in our society and the fact that they represent something of another time and are NOT ONLINE, they are concrete and a keepsake you can keep forever. I am not opposed to advertising which would be my second career choice if Vogue won't take me. What I love about advertising is the ambiguity of the subject matter and where you can take a brand. Branding is huge in our world today and to be apart of this massive force that continues to grow would be FABULOUS. That's about it for now.....

More Inspiration!

Love these images! design.design.design. Rex Ray is one of my most favorite and loved designers/artists. I admire all of his work. I was able to see an exhibit showcasing his work at the Museum of Arts and Crafts in San Francisco and have been a fan ever since. I can always find inspiration in interior design and most particularly ones that present art in its finest form in a living space.

Inspiration

I constantly find new inspiration every where I look on a daily basis. Sometimes when I simply look up and admire the clouds and the sky I find inspiration. Sometimes just looking out the window on a rainy day can bring me motivation. Most of all I find my most meaningful inspiration through museums and almost all kinds of designers. One of the most amazing exhibits I have ever seen was the Andy Warhol exhibit at the deYoung Museum. Warhol is an artist who literally blows me away with his innovation at such a time when no one was breaking the rules like he was. I am always drawn to color and as you start to follow my designs you will see this is pretty obvious in all of my work. A lot of designers and artists are afraid of color, but I on the other hand want to embrace it in all of my work as much as possible. Warhol was an avid user of bright vivid colors which I adore. Whenever I start to feel my mind go blank, I can look at one of his pieces and get that little push I need to get my mind spinning.
The most crucial place I always find inspiration is in fashion magazines. My favorites being the most obvious:
1. Vogue
2. InStyle
3. Vanity Fair
4. Harpers Bazaar
Since I was a little girl I have always admired everything about magazines. I couldn't read when I was 3, but I would pick up my mom's Vogue and gaze at all of the images of decadent gowns and gorgeous designs. It was when I came into my pre-teens and I started becoming more obsessed and cutting all of my favorite images and pasting them into constant collages, that I knew this hobby had become my passion. I always find myself amazed at the design of the layouts in my most favorite magazine and think in wonder and awe of the process the team goes through to develop these masterpieces. Everything from the themes, the photographs, the way in which they are juxtaposed on a page, it all blows my mind and I love that feeling. In this day in age people are becoming more prone to just searching the web and looking at these magazines webpages rather than spending the five or six dollars. I am an avid supporter of finding a way of replacing this notion with one of authenticity and tradition by trying to inspire people to continue purchasing this classic and one of a kind pieces of art. Whenever I see a Vogue from the 1950's I lose it. I want people to understand that these are heirlooms of a generation that is rapidly changing and the investment is worth the splurge for later years to come when you still have that magazine and your daughter gawks at the images and the design of your time.
Another little treasure where I always find inspiration is in anything vintage bohemian chic as I would say. This can range from your local thrift store to that secret hidden one no one knows about to a beautiful garden blooming in a courtyard. Anything dainty and feminine. I love looking daily at designsponge.com because they constantly show designers ranging from interiors to graphics and breath taking interior layouts. The website is designed in a way that really trends my own design aesthetic and what I strive to achieve in my own work. Watching old movies, flipping through vintage books, listening to vinyl records, researching the sixties pop culture and absorbing every little piece of hippe chic I possibly can stuff into my brain, these are all places I find inspiration.
Last but certainly not least, is my love of Art Nouveau. When I had my first art class in high school I realized how I really felt the most in-tune with all of the work produced during this time. I loved the whimsical lines, the reminiscence of nature, the feminine styles, the subdued color, pastels, the shape, the forms, the effect of lighting, I love it all. I keep books around my house about the movement and the artists who took part. Alphonse Mucha naturally being a favorite of all time for me but Gustave Klimt not far behind as well as Victor Horta. Art Nouveau is a movement that I think is very much still alive among artists today and is constantly revived and re-visited in different time era's like the 1960's. I will always continue to find inspiration in the movement and cherish it till I no longer have anything else to learn.
