Final Problem and Purpose Statement
After much work and deliberation and with the help of my peers in the collaboratory on Tuesday, I have devised my final project plan for the DAI 505 Research and Development Laboratory class I am currently enrolled in this semester.
Problem: Residents of Bayside Village in San Francisco are not aware of fire hazards within their unit.
Purpose Statement: The purpose of this study is to determine why residents are not aware of fire hazards and to implement a plan to better educate them.
This project is dedicated in the memory of my big brother Matthew who lost his life on July 19, 2009 to a fire that broke out in his apartment unit in Hunington Beach, CA. My brother was fast asleep in his room when the fire erupted and passed away from smoke inhalation(the number one cause of fatalities during a fire). Had the smoke detectors been properly working and had the unit been constructed better in case of a fire, I can't help but wonder if he had a fighting chance. I want to make sure all people are aware of the building codes and the fire hazards posed in their living units and to ensure this never happens to any one again. I hope you will follow me along my journey through this process of finding a solution and creating an end to this giant issue.

I am so proud of what you are doing, Amanda! Your work will save many and somehow bring you peace during your life without Matthew! I look forward to seeing the results.
